Historical Significance

The formally titled "Villa Santa Maria del Monte" was the vision of Mary Dower. In 1930, alongside her husband John L. Dower, they transformed the former Cassells Hotel into a sanctuary for underprivileged children. During the height of the Great Depression, the camp followed a radical mission: "No child who attends may pay. No child who can pay may attend."

Engineering & Artistry

  • The Pedestal Grotto

The 22-foot pedestal was constructed on-site in one-foot sections. Hidden at the base is an open grotto containing a life-size statue of the reclining body of Christ attended by two angels.

  • The Terra Cotta Build

The 33-foot figure was carved from clay at the Northwest Terra Cotta Company. Its design features a unique ivory-colored robe that creates a sharp visual contrast against the white skin of the sculpture.

  • World Standing

At the time of its completion in 1933, it was reportedly the second-tallest statue of Jesus in the world, serving as a beacon for travelers and camp residents alike.
