Coolin' the Dogs & Dusty

A tribute to the Western spirit, resting right in the heart of downtown Castle Rock. The story behind the cowboy "Gus" and his loyal companion.

Open in Google Maps

If you walk past the Philip S. Miller Library without looking closely, you might miss one of Castle Rock's quietest residents. He sits on a rock, boots worn from the trail, while his dog leans in for a drink.

This is "Gus" (the cowboy) and "Dusty" (the dog). Created by sculptor Craig Bergsgaard, this life-size bronze captures a moment of pause. It’s not an action shot; it’s a moment of reflection.

For locals, it’s a touchstone of our town’s identity: a blend of rugged history and a modern appreciation for slowing down.

About the Artist

Craig Bergsgaard is a Windsor-based artist known for his historical accuracy. He transitioned from construction to sculpture, focusing on the "spirits" of the West—the everyday characters rather than just the legends.

  2. Coffee at Lost Coffee 390 Perry St. Inside an old stone building.
  3. Festival Park Walk off the caffeine by the creek.
