Joan of Arc (c.1412–1431) was a French peasant girl from Domrémy who claimed to receive divine visions directing her to support Charles VII and recover France from English domination during the Hundred Years War. At age 17, she convinced the French royal court to allow her to lead troops. Her military campaigns turned the tide of the war — most importantly, she broke the Siege of Orléans in 1429, an event that changed the course of French history. She was subsequently captured by Burgundian forces, sold to the English, tried for heresy, and burned at the stake in Rouen at approximately age 19.

Joan of Arc was declared a martyr and ultimately canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church in 1920 — nearly 500 years after her death. She has become one of the most iconic figures in Western history, inspiring centuries of art, literature, and political movements. She is simultaneously a Catholic saint, a French national heroine, a symbol of feminine courage, and a figure appropriated by diverse political ideologies ranging from French nationalism to feminism. Her image — armored, on horseback, carrying a standard — is immediately recognizable worldwide.

Portland's Joan of Arc statue reflects the city's connection to French culture through immigration and cultural exchange, as well as the strong Catholic presence in early Oregon history. The French name "Portland" — chosen in 1845 by a coin toss between two founders from Massachusetts and Maine — is coincidental, but the city has maintained French cultural connections. The equestrian statue of Joan of Arc in Portland joins a tradition of such monuments in cities across the United States and France, honoring a figure who transcends her medieval origins to speak to enduring themes of courage, faith, and resistance.
